Visiting an orphanage where children have been abandoned is a difficult thing to describe. The children here are primarily mentally or physically disabled. Some are severely deformed, some simply receive palliative care, while waiting to die.
This little guy is blind...
I reached out to touch his little hand…..he latched on with a grip I could not pull away from. He moved to a standing position and, with arms outstretched,…reached up to be held…. When I picked him up…he hugged me so tight.. He rested his head on my shoulder and burrowed into my neck, trying to get closer……My heart ached for the need of human contact this little one displayed. I began to sing to him, as I would my own grand child………”You Are My Sunshine…My only Sunshine….You make me happy when skies are gray”……You’ll never know dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away”….
He lifted his head up to listen more closely, and gifted me with a smile…he returned to my shoulder to rest his head against my skin. His body relaxed. He felt at peace, comforted….If only it could be for more than a few moments. I cried.
These children are simply discarded, abandoned……but, despite their handicap or deformity, they are human beings who deserve to be cared for and loved.
There is little I can do to change the situation these children are in…
But I can come here and love them, I can touch them, hold them and share a smile.
I can bring medical supplies and donations to help sustain them. I can pray for them. I can remember them.
I don’t share these pictures to exploit these precious children. I share their pictures and stories so you can join in my journey. I share pictures and stories so you too, can be a part of this important work.
