2019 Can Tho Mission

Can Tho Central General Hospital Cardiac Surgery and ICU care

In 2019, IHVN returned to Can Tho hospital with a complete surgical team of experts to work with the local team. During this mission, 10 patients received open heart surgeries over 5 days. Surgeries included coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement and included off pump procedures new to this hospital. IHVN coordinated donations from Medtronic and others including: sutures, perfusion supplies, OR supplies and drugs used in OR and ICU care, valued at over $197,000. IHVN also provided financial support to selected cardiac patients.

Interventional Cardiology

12 patients were treated using 33 drug eluting stents, balloon and guide wires donated through IHVN. Donations from Medtronic were valued at $157,400.

Echocardiography

IHVN brought a cardiologist with expertise in adult cardiology to work with local staff doctors. There were many opportunities for bedside training in CCU and medical ICU. The IHVN echo team and cardiologist also participated daily in consultation with surgical teams for all open-heart surgeries performed during the week as well as cardiac patients in CCU and ICU.

Education and Training

IHVN’s medical team provided post operative care and assistance to all surgical patients. The team, made up of an Intensivist and ICU RNs from IHVN provided bed side training for local ICU doctors and nurses. Daily mini lectures were held on cardiac/ICU topics as requested by the local team.
